Taxing the childfree?

Opinion columnist Christian Trejbal writes in the Roanoke Times that President Bush's tax policies favor people with children:

President Bush and the Republicans who control Congress have a soft spot not just for the wealthy but also for married couples and families. Six years of tax cuts have lightened the civic burden on both demographics, shamelessly shifting it onto low- and middle-income households, especially the ones with young, single taxpayers.

It drives me nuts that I intentionally don't have children because I can't afford them, and because I choose to act in a responsible manner, I'm penalized with higher taxes. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah, as a responsible, home-owning 28 year old woman, I have yet to see a tax break. And yet, the tax deduction hasn't convinced me to reproduce.....

Believe me, the deduction for a working-class person is not even FELT. I worked and paid taxes for 20 years before I had a baby (and for 18 years before I got married), and financially, I had it better during my single years, on MUCH less income.

Best deduction I've ever had, single/married/childfree/parent, is definitely from my home mortgage!

this has nothing to do with being a republican; if that were the case Rush would have a litter of crotch dropplings.
